AKD WAX CAS NO.: 144245-85-2

Chemical Name: Alkyl Ketene Dimer
Alias: AKD Wax

Alkyl ketene dimer (AKD) is a widely used neutral sizing agent in papermaking. The structural formula consists of alkyl groups (R or R'), with different alkyl modifications producing various AKD compounds. Octodecane and cetane are commonly used in papermaking neutral sizing agents.

AKD wax appears as a white-to-yellow solid with a melting point of approximately 47–51°C and is soluble in ethyl alcohol, benzene, chloroform, and other organic solvents. The reactive ketone group in AKD has high activity and undergoes esterification with hydroxyl groups in cellulose.

Specification

Appearance: Light yellow granule
Melting Point: 47°C
Iodine Number (Iâ‚‚) (w/g/100g): 45.0 min
Acid Value (KOH) (w/g/100g): 5.0 max
Purity: 88% min
Toluene Content: 0.001% max

Product Application

AKD wax is used to produce AKD emulsions, which serve as sizing agents in papermaking. The emulsification process involves a cationic emulsifier, high-speed shearing, and high-pressure homogenization, resulting in a liquid AKD sizing agent after cooling.

In the papermaking process, AKD sizing agents provide fluid resistance to paper and paperboard, preventing liquid penetration and diffusion, enhancing paper durability. AKD contains both hydrophobic and hydrophilic groups, facilitating even distribution and bonding with cellulose fibers.

During paper production, AKD particles, which carry a positive charge, are retained between negatively charged paper fibers with the help of cationic starch, PAM, and other retention agents. In the pressing and drying stages, AKD particles expand and form a uniform film over the fibers due to their low melting point. Over time, the lactone ring in AKD molecules undergoes esterification with hydroxyl groups in the fibers, forming covalent bonds, thereby enhancing paper hydrophobicity and resistance to liquid absorption.

SFP Liquid (CI. 357)

SFP Liquid is a brilliant, urea-free, hexasulphonated stilbene brightener suitable for Size Press and Coating applications.

Properties

Chemistry: Derivative of Stilbene Disulphonic Acid
Appearance: Clear yellowish liquid
Ionic Nature: Anionic
Specific Gravity: 1.10-1.12
Shade: Bluish to neutral white
Solubility: Soluble in all proportions
Substantivity: High
pH (1% aqueous solution): 8-10.5

Note: The product's performance is not affected by its color.

Stability

SFP Liquid remains stable for 12 months in a closed container at room temperature. It also maintains its stability in acids, alkalis, and hard water, both in liquor and on fiber.

It is highly stable during storage, even at cold temperatures. If stored below 0°C, it may freeze, but can be thawed at room temperature or briefly heated (not exceeding 60°C) without losing effectiveness.

Uses

SFP Liquid is an optimal optical brightening agent (OBA) for Coating and Sizing applications, offering performance equivalent to OBAs of the same chemistry and strength.

Fastness Properties

The light fastness of SFP Liquid is comparable to other OBAs with similar chemical structures.

Safety & Environment

Standard chemical handling precautions must be followed during storage, handling, and use. More details are available in the Safety Data Sheet (SDS).

Application in Size Press

SFP Liquid performs effectively with conventional starches used at the Size Press. It is compatible with CMC, PVA, anionic, and weakly cationic synthetic sizing agents.

Key Considerations:

  • Works best when the base paper pH is above 5.0.

  • Typical dosage: 0.5-7.5 g/L in Size Press liquor.

Application in Coating

OBAs of the diamino stilbene disulphonic acid derivative class do not strongly bind to coating pigments and synthetic latexes (acrylic acid ester or butadiene-styrene copolymers). Co-binders are required for optimal effect.

Suitable Co-Binders (Based on Solids Content):

  • PVA: 1.2 parts

  • CMC: 1.2 parts

  • Starch: 6.0 parts

  • Synthetic co-binders: 0.4 parts

To a lesser extent, melamine and urea formaldehyde-based cross-linking agents can also act as carriers for OBAs.

Performance Considerations:

  • Works effectively at pH 7-11 without affecting the rheological properties of coating formulations.

  • Can be added undiluted at nearly any stage of the coating preparation process.

  • Typical dosage: 0.2-1.0 parts based on coating pigment (adjusted as per brightness requirements).

Uses

UP Liquid in the Wet End
UP Liquid is suitable for sized unfilled and filled paper & board (pH 4-9), as well as unsized paper, provided the water hardness is above 50 ppm CaO. It is ideal for furnishes containing a high proportion of mechanical pulp or secondary fiber.

Shade

UP Liquid delivers a neutral shade in all applications. However, excessive usage may lead to a greenish hue.

Stability

UP Liquid exhibits high stability during storage and at cold temperatures. If stored below 0°C, it may freeze, but it can be thawed without losing effectiveness when left at room temperature or heated briefly (not exceeding 60°C).

Fastness Properties

Its light fastness is comparable to other OBAs with the same chemical structure.

Safety & Environment

Standard chemical handling and safety guidelines must be followed. Further details can be found in the Safety Data Sheet (SDS).

Application in the Wet End

UP Liquid can be introduced:

  • Batch-wise in the pulper or mixing chest

  • Continuously at suitable dosing points in the stock preparation system

Important Considerations:

  • Apply before alum or cationic auxiliaries.

  • Whiteness depends on treatment time and furnish consistency.

  • Best effect is achieved when dosed at points of high furnish consistency, particularly in soft water conditions.

Typical Dosage: 0.2-1.0 parts based on coating pigment (adjusted for brightness requirements)

Note: Dilute solutions should not be exposed to natural light.

ABP Liquid (C.I. 220)

ABP Liquid is a brilliant, urea-free, tetra-sulphonate stilbene brightener, suitable for application at the Wet End, Size Press, and in Coatings.

Properties

  • Appearance: Clear, yellow to yellowish-brown liquid

  • Chemical Constitution: Diaminostilbene disulphonic acid derivative

  • Solubility: Fully miscible with water in all proportions

  • pH (1% aqueous solution): 8.0-10.0

  • Density at 25°C: 1.10 ± 0.05 g/cm³

  • Ionic Character: Anionic

Usage

1. In the Wet End

  • Ideal for sized, unfilled, and filled paper & board (pH 4-9), as well as unsized paper, provided water hardness exceeds 50 ppm CaO.

Fastness Properties

  • Light fastness is comparable to other OBAs with the same chemical structure.

Application Guidelines

ABP Liquid in the Wet End

  • Can be batch-added in the pulp/mixing chest or continuously dosed in the stock preparation system.

  • Apply before alum or cationic additives.

  • Best effect is achieved when dosed at high-consistency furnish points, especially in soft water conditions.

  • Typical Dosage: 0.05-1.0% (based on bone-dry cellulose weight).

ABP Liquid at the Size Press

  • Works well with conventional starches.
